Innovation Leadership Requirements – Creativity

found it interesting yesterday to see that IBM’s Institute for Business Value, a think tank and research organization, has surveyed CEOs of major corporations to try to understand the key characteristics that leaders will need in the near future. I guess I should be more specific – I didn’t think it was interesting that they asked 1500 CEOs about the important attributes and skills necessary for future leaders to possess. I found it interesting that the number one skill they recommended was “creativity”.

Filthy Rich Portlets with ICEfaces and Liferay

When a portlet form is submitted, all the other portlets on the same portal page are forced to redraw themselves. In this presentation, filmed at the recent JSFOne Conference, I show you how ICEfaces Direct-to-DOM rendering provides a cure for this disruptive end-user experience, and how ICEfaces Ajax Push supplies a rich alternative for inter-portlet communication. Demonstrations are performed within Liferay Portal, a JSR 286 (Portlet 2.0) compliant portlet container.

Disruptive innovation in online advertising – Chief Marketing Technologist

Are the creative capabilities of major advertising agencies really being disrupted by online marketing? Here’s one theory.

Clay Christensen, Harvard Business School professor and author of bestselling books such as The Innovator’s Dilemma and The Innovator’s Solution, has a model for disruptive innovation. As a particular type of product or service improves over time, its “performance” — i.e., how powerful it is along a certain dimension of capability that buyers care about — eventually overshoots the needs of most customers (shown as a dotted line in the image below).

Facebook’s watching you, brother. « IO 9elements

There is a potential side-effect of the new facebook “like” button, which has currently not reached public awareness, but it probably should. It starts when you leave the facebook website. I usually don’t log out, my friends don’t log out, and in fact most people don’t log out. We all know this is too much of a hassle. Now, if I visit a website which has integrated the “like” iframe, facebook might just know that I am there. Because I didn’t log out before. And why shouldn’t facebook track the referrer combined with the user id of every requested iframe?

ZURB – Super Awesome Buttons with CSS3 and RGBA

One of our favorite things about CSS3 is the addition of RGBA, a color mode that adds alpha-blending to your favorite CSS properties. We've kicked the tires on it a bit with our own projects and have found that it helps streamline our CSS and makes scaling things like buttons very easy. To show you how, we've cooked up an example with some super awesome, scalable buttons.

Build it and They Will Telemed? | Blog | design mind

In the healthcare device and software industry, the mantra: build it and they will come doesn’t work. It hasn’t worked since Noah built an ark or the movie Field of Dreams was made. Ignoring the user experience is what’s wrong with the healthcare experience and begs for innovation.

Onlive Demo TEST / UX

Take a look at the newest Tech Game consoleSAN FRANCISCO–Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, look out. Your traditional video game console business model may be in danger.

Its too early to tell how much danger, of course, but a start-up called OnLive announced a brand-new game distribution system Monday night that, if it works as planned, could change the games game forever.

OnLive, which was started by WebTV founder Steve Perlman and former Eidos CEO Mike McGarvey, is aiming to launch a system–seven years in the works–that will digitally distribute first-run, AAA games from publishers like Electronic Arts, Take-Two, Ubisoft, Atari, and others, all at the same time as those titles are released into retail channels. The system is designed to allow players to stream on-demand games at the highest quality onto any Intel-based Mac or PC running XP or Vista, regardless of how powerful the computer.

The system will also stream games directly to a TV via a small plug-in device, and players can use a custom wireless controller as well as VoIP headsets in conjunction with it.

Pitchfork: New Daft Punk in Tron Legacy Trailer

While lots of fake MP3s claiming to be “new Daft Punk music from Tron!” have come and gone over the last few months, we finally have our first real taste of the French duo's score for the forthcoming Tron Legacy. In the second half of the new trailer for the sequel to the 1982 cult classic, we hear a ridiculously huge pulse that sounds like Human After All ripped on gallons of muscle milk. The thing looks amazing, too.

Creating an agile organization

The ability to innovate faster and in new ways will always be critical to achieving high performance. But given the new dynamics of a fast-changing and less predictable global economy, a number of competitive assumptions are changing. One of the most important changes: The new business environment will favor those companies able to execute innovations faster, and to move their organizations forward more nimbly.

Open or Closed OTT? « Andrew Burke’s Hardcore IPTV Blog

Closed OTT is where the internet video experience is managed by the service provider and open web content is chosen and integrated into a walled garden of the best bits (or most lucrative bits depending on how generous we are being)

Open OTT is where the consumer gets to move away from the confines of the service providers editorialised experience and ‘surfs’ the open web unheeded (normally using a browser that handles all the different display and encoding formats)

Dieter Rams: ten principles for good design

Back in the early 1980s, Dieter Rams was becoming increasingly concerned by the state of the world around him – “an impenetrable confusion of forms, colours and noises.” Aware that he was a significant contributor to that world, he asked himself an important question: is my design good design?

As good design cannot be measured in a finite way he set about expressing the ten most important principles for what he considered was good design. (Sometimes they are referred as the ‘Ten commandments’.)

Here they are.

Five Ways the iPad Will Change Magazine Design | New at Pentagram | Pentagram

If the iPad ushers in a new golden age of information design, things like New York's Approval Matrix, designed by Luke Hayman in 2005, may become the new norm.

The new iPad from Apple, presented in typical Steve Jobs fashion as game-changing, will, in fact, revolutionize the way we read magazines. Combining the rich visual content of a print publication, the ever-changing immediacy of a website, and the portability of an e-book reader, the iPad is something new.

Pentagram’s Luke Hayman, designer of, among others, Time, New York, and Travel + Leisure, was asked how this new format would change the world of magazines and came up with five ways off the top of his head.

CMOs: Your Brand Is On Digital Time – Forbes.com

While the reviewers pick apart Apple's iPad, one unassailable argument remains: We are not just living in digital times, but on digital time.

From getting news to reading the latest best-selling novel, to watching reruns of Gilligan's Island, most of the content, products, information and entertainment we enjoy is available with a click. Consumers are conditioned to get what they want when they want it. I'm not sure this “double-click mentality” is necessarily a healthy thing, but it's real, and the reality has huge implications for marketing and media executives. People want things that are immediate and convenient. Woe to marketers–even bricks-and-mortar retailers–that don't get this. Double-click gratification is a table stake.

How Conceptual Metaphors are Stunting Web Innovation

folders

Consider these terms: page, scroll, file, folder, trash can, bookmark, inbox, email, desktop, library, archive and index. They are all part of the document metaphor, a superset of the “desktop” metaphor. Some elements, such as scroll, desktop and library pre-date the printing press, but all are based on some sort of “marks on paper-like material” reference.

It is important to understand that the document metaphor is more than a UI metaphor. It is in fact a fundamental way of understanding one domain in terms of another. For better or worse, we continue to understand the web in relation to how we understand documents. Unlike figurative metaphors, such as “he was a lion in battle,” which are simple rhetorical statements, conceptual metaphors (a notion introduced in the classic “Metaphors We Live By” by Lakoff and Johnson) like document-ness are pre-linguistic, and quietly ubiquitous. They infiltrate how we think about things on a much more basic level.

We may monitor innovative designers and the sites of influence that have paved the way for the practices we engage in as user experience and visual designers. In a way, it allows us to remain competitive to know what others are up to, but that awareness alone can be a double-edged sword.

The number of followers you have on Twitter doesn’t really matter.
